Why did you choose to come to AMSC?
I was drawn to the AMSC program by the diverse set of research interests in the faculty. When starting my PhD, I was largely undecided on the specific area of math I was most attracted to, and the faculty were very helpful when discussing their work as well as directing me towards more like-minded professors. The university also has several very strong departments in the application areas that were of interest to me so the decision to be a Terp was easy!

What are your research interests and why? How did you discover this interest?
My research is in theoretical computer science, more specifically in the subfields of algorithmic game theory and approximate algorithms. These problems concerning inapproximability and devising solutions that navigate around these hurdles are both challenging and exciting. Though I did not initially have interest in computer science when coming to UMD, I was fascinated by game theory and the dynamics of evolving systems. In searching for modern work in these fields, problems pertaining to algorithms seemed to be a very booming area that I was eager to investigate.

What do you like to do in your free time?
Outside of my research, I can often be found sampling all the coffee in the DC area. If it’s too late in the day for coffee, then I can probably be found at one of the trivia nights around town, consistently scoring a 3rd place finish (one of these days I will win).

What are your favorite parts of the greater Washington DC area? 
I live in NoMa so it certainly has a soft spot in my heart, but there is quite literally nothing better than biking the national mall on a nice (not humid) day. Be sure to check out all the history and culture this town has to offer.


What advice would you give to incoming students?
Never be afraid to ask questions or jump into a new field of research! Your graduate schooling is primarily driven by your passion for the work you do, so do not settle for work you don’t love. This is also your time to be naïve and bring a fresh set of eyes to old problems, so be prepared to play the fool.
