Matthew Becker (M.S. ’17, Ph.D. ’18, applied mathematics & statistics, and scientific computation) has published a math-infused thriller novel titled Run, blending mathematical concepts with suspenseful storytelling. Published by Aethon Books in September 2024, the novel incorporates clues such as references to pi, Fibonacci numbers, and Fermat’s Last Theorem, challenging mathematically inclined readers to uncover hidden patterns while engaging a wider audience in an exciting mystery.
Set in the Washington, D.C. area, Run follows Veronica Walsh, a mathematics professor who mysteriously disappears after sending an unusual message to her husband. As he searches for answers, he becomes entangled in multiple murder investigations that reveal unexpected truths. Becker developed his mathematical expertise at the University of Maryland, where his research focused on modeling cancer tumor growth and multi-drug resistance, and later worked as a mathematician at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
Since its release, Run has received positive reviews and marks the beginning of a planned three-book series, with the sequel Don’t Look Down published in January 2025. His work highlights the intersection of mathematics and storytelling, demonstrating how mathematical ideas can inspire creative narratives and engage audiences beyond traditional academic settings.
