AMSC Faculty Abba Gumel and Professor Wolfgang Losert Named 2022 Fellows of the American Association of Science (AAAS)

AMSC faculty Abba Gumel and Wolfgang Losert were named as the 2022 fellows of the AAAS. This fellowship elects those “whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications in service to society have distinguished them among their peers and colleagues.”

Abba Gumel

Abba Gumel is a mathematical biologist who joined the UMD community in the fall of 2022 as an Endowed Chair in Mathematics and a professor. His research focuses on creating and analyzing mathematical models that allow for an understanding of the transmission of infectious diseases using computational mathematics and the qualitative theory of nonlinear dynamical systems. Gumel's research is aimed at contributing to effective public health policy for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

Wolfgang Losert

Wolfgang Losert is a professor in the Department of Physics at UMD. His research focuses on discovering properties of Complex Systems at the convergence of physics and biology. Losert leads a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative funded by the Air Force Office that focuses on how cells sense the physical environment around them. Outside of research, Losert has partnered with NEXUS to develop courses for biology students that are being introduced into universities.
