Dr. Abba Gumel has been honored as a Fellow of the Unesco's World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). TWAS selects individuals regarded as "some of the world's most accomplished scientists and engineers." The academy is dedicated to acknowledging and supporting innovative research in developing countries, with a concurrent commitment to fostering global collaboration in science to address challenges in these regions.

Dr. Gumel was appointed as a Fellow in recognition of his significant contributions to the fields of mathematical biology, applied dynamical systems, and computational mathematics. Serving as a Professor and holding The Michael and Eugenia Brin Endowed E-Nnovate Chair at the University of Maryland, he spearheads research that employs a mathematical framework to enhance comprehension of emerging infectious diseases. His work plays a pivotal role in informing public policy on infectious diseases. Dr. Gumel has achieved notable progress in unraveling the intricacies of diseases like malaria, sexually transmitted infections, swine influenza, and COVID-19.

In addition to his election as a Fellow, Dr. Gumel has been honored with the prestigious Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award. This accolade is bestowed upon members of The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS/SCMAI) for their exceptional contributions to the society or to the field of Applied Mathematics in Canada. Dr. Gumel's recognition stems from his exemplary service to CAIMS, where he has held diverse roles, including Secretary, Director, Chair of Membership, Organizer of Summer Schools, and numerous other pivotal positions.
