Ten Minute Madness
On May 11, 2017, the AMSC department hosted Ten Minute Madness, a resurgence of an event which had been routinely held every semester. As the name implies, Ten Minute Madness boasts a whirlwind of research presentations. Faculty members are challenged to introduce their current research in a ten minute presentation that leaves little room for straying. This is a great benefit to the students – seasoned students get a fresh view of the innovative research that the department is pursuing, and faculty can entice new students into working with them. Among this year’s presenters were Sean Barnes, applying mathematical models in healthcare; Dionisios Margetis, discussing the applied mathematics of crystals; Alexander Barg, putting algebraic geometry to use at Facebook; Maria Camperon, modeling aggregation and dynamics of interacting particles; and Radu Balan, analyzing quantum information systems and machine learning. After the successful series of presentations, a reception was held in the rotunda to celebrate. AMSC intends to renew this event so that the department can continue to support and encourage the ongoing research efforts of students and faculty. Be sure to mark your calendars for Ten Minute Madness 2018!
